Isaac Newland Gandy 1897 – 1947

Isaac “Duke” Gandy

Third son Isaac, born 1897, was 13 years old when father and namesake Isaac died in 1910. I don’t know where did the nickname “Duke” came from, but remember that my own father Harold Gandy was called The Duke by his sisters and brothers in Widnes. He said it was because he was a “snappy” dresser!

One interesting thing about the naming pattern in the Gandy family is the links to other branches of the family. Eldest son Charles was probably named after Ike’s brother Charles in Chilliwack and Langley. Isaac Newland Gandy was named Newland probably after the married name of niece Martha Gandy, daughter of Peter Gandy and living in California. Read more about the Newlands here:

In the early days Duke worked as a chauffeur, living in 1917 with the family at 1511 Chambers St and then at 1500 Fort St in 1920-21. In 1941 we find Duke and family living in the family home at 1338 Grant Street.

Marriage to Florence Louisa Mayar in 1922

Isaac “Duke” Gandy married Florence Louisa Mayar in 1922. They lived at 1442 Camosun St after their marriage.

Florence Bible

Inscription: “Florence L. Mayar from Mother, Christmas 1917, age 19 yrs.”

Information about Duke and Florence is quite good, but I have no photograph of Duke.

He died in 1947 but Florence lived to a good old age, as the photo below left shows.  She died in 1990 and is buried together with Isaac in Royal Oak Burial Park – photo right.
